The Day Nursery Auxiliary was founded in 1938 by Mrs. James T. Cunningham, a board member of the Day Nursery Association, and launched by a team of women dedicated to carrying out the Day Nursery mission through their volunteer work. The Day Nursery Auxiliary’s mission includes raising money for Early Learning Indiana, providing volunteer services and interpreting the work of Early Learning Indiana to the community.
Auxiliary volunteer activities at the Day Early Learning centers include classroom projects and vision screenings. In recent years, the primary Auxiliary fundraiser has been the annual Style Show in October, an elegant luncheon and fashion show featuring designs from The Secret Ingredient and Day Furs.
The Auxiliary makes an annual contribution to Early Learning Indiana; often the gift is earmarked for special projects. In 2013, the Auxiliary celebrated their 75th anniversary with a generous gift to the Day Early Learning Centers that funded the installation and ongoing support of LifeCubby, the parent communication tool and teacher record-keeping software used in all of the Day Early Learning Centers. Parents access LifeCubby through their smartphones and computers to track their child’s day with basic information as well as photos and videos that capture special moments.
The Auxiliary co-presidents serve on the Early Learning Indiana Board of Directors. New members, elected by the Auxiliary Membership Committee, provide many hours of service annually during their years of active membership. After completing active service, members become associates.
Although there are no service requirements for associates, many continue their active support for Early Learning Indiana and participation in Auxiliary events and activities. From an original membership of 23, the Auxiliary now counts over 200 members.
